The Vooka Breakfast Show’s special broadcast from #RandShow2025 afforded an in-depth dialogue with Captain Lefa Lebitso, Gauteng Provincial Coordinator for the Directorate for Priority Crime Investigation (Hawks) and Warrant Officer Tony Abrahams, Economic Protected Resources Investigator, illuminating the directorate’s strategic approach to tackling priority crimes, especially human trafficking. During the in-depth interview, the Hawks representatives outlined the meticulous investigative processes, inter-agency collaborations, and advanced forensic techniques employed to dismantle syndicates and bring perpetrators to justice. Highlights included the October 2024 Melkbosstrand arrest of a couple charged with rape and trafficking in persons, following the victim’s escape and inter-departmental coordination. In December 2024, a 17-year-old girl was rescued from captivity in Vanrhynsdorp after being trafficked from Mozambique two years prior, resulting in a foreign national’s arrest and ongoing prosecution. The segment also revisited the landmark 25 February 2025 conviction of seven Chinese nationals for human trafficking and child labour at a Johannesburg factory, underscoring the Hawks’ role in dismantling illicit labour syndicates.
A Glimpse Behind the Investigation
During the sit-down, the Hawks’ representatives described how each lead is meticulously verified through digital forensics, undercover operations, and intelligence sharing with local and international agencies. Emphasis was placed on the psychological support provided to victims during investigations, with social services integrated from the outset to safeguard survivors’ well-being.
Foiling Human Trafficking Networks
The Melkbosstrand case, investigated by a multi-disciplinary team including the Hawks and SAPS K9 Unit, spotlighted the importance of rapid response following a victim’s escape, leading to the arrest of suspects on 31 October 2024. In Vanrhynsdorp, Hawks operations uncovered the trafficking of a Mozambican teenager, culminating in her rescue on 6 December 2024 and the suspect’s first court appearance on charges of trafficking in persons and immigration violations. The ongoing sentencing proceedings for the seven Chinese nationals found guilty on nearly 160 counts, including human trafficking and labour law violations, illustrate the Hawks’ commitment to holding complex syndicates accountable.
Reckoning with Complex Challenges
Resource constraints and bureaucratic hurdles were cited as persistent obstacles, with the Hawks adapting by implementing specialised task teams and leveraging community tip-lines to extend their operational reach. The unit also faces evolving criminal tactics, as syndicates increasingly exploit digital currencies and encrypted communications, necessitating ongoing training and technological investment.
Hawks at #RandShow2025: Outreach and Transparency
Beyond the studio, the Hawks commanded attention at their #RandShow2025 exhibition booth, where live forensic demonstrations and interactive career kiosks underscored their dual role in law enforcement and public education. Attendees were encouraged to engage in real-time Q&A sessions with Hawks investigators, providing a rare window into casework and reinforcing the message that community collaboration is vital in the fight against organised crime. The Hawks’ participation at the Rand Show, held from 17 to 21 April 2025 at the Johannesburg Expo Centre, solidified their pledge to transparency, recruitment, and continuous public engagement.
